278. Troy with special guest Chris Cirigliano
April 25, 2025 · 105 min

“I’ll tell you a secret. Something they don't teach you in your temple. The Gods envy us. They envy us because we're mortal, because any moment might be our last.” We watched Wolfgang Peterson’s sword and sandal epic ‘Troy’ with our friend Chris Cirigliano. Based on Homer’s the Iliad , this summer blockbuster had many turning their nose up at its historical inaccuracies and poor adaptation of the epic poem. There are no Gods, or Mount Olympus to be found here, but what it does have is a beefed-up Brad Pitt with bleach-blonde highlights. We talk about the wave of historical epics to follow Gladiator and if Troy exactly holds up as being one of the better ones. Would adding more camp or fantastical elements have helped its material? And more importantly, what are we to make of its ‘no homo’ approach to cutting out the Achilles and Patroclus relationship? According to what we see portrayed here, history will say they were good friends. At a butt-numbing 196 minutes, it’s one of the longest movies ever reviewed for the podcast.
