Gross domestic product, which measures all the goods and services produced in the economy, registered at an annualized rate of -0.3% in the first quarter. That's a sharp slowdown from the fourth quarter's 2.4% rate, and much worse than the 0.8% rate economists projected. Some contributing factors: Government spending is down about 5%. Some businesses chose to stockpile goods in Q4 given the uncertainty over Trump's tariff plan. A rule of thumb for defining a recession is two consecutive quarters of negative GDP.
