Too Much Time to Fill: WWE Creative Stalls Under Content Demands (ep.928)
May 15, 2025 · 57 min
In the past, WWE thrived under time constraints, delivering tight, compelling hour-long wrestling shows that left fans wanting more. Fast-forward to today, and the landscape is flooded with content—up to eight hours weekly between Raw, SmackDown, NXT, premium live events, and online programming. Despite this abundance, or perhaps because of it, the product is suffering creatively. With more hours to fill than ever, the lack of innovation and engaging storytelling is painfully clear, exposing a major flaw in WWE’s modern formula and threatening the long-term value TKO Group Holdings can extract from its media partnerships. At the JP Morgan Global Technology, Media and Communications Conference, TKO President Mark Shapiro touted WWE's premium live events strategy, calling it “very high quality but low volume”—a uniqueness he claims differentiates WWE from other content producers. He also addressed the forthcoming docuseries WWE: UNREAL, noting fans’ curiosity about the creative process: “I always tell Nick Khan, careful, let’s not give away the Coca-Cola recipe here… But having said that, I think just a little sneak behind into the writers room is evidence by SNL, something all fans and viewers want to see.”Shapiro’s comments highlight a growing disconnect between WWE’s perception of its product and the fan experience—where more content doesn't mean better content, and the creative well is clearly running dry.Contact KOP for professional podcast production, imaging, and web design services at http://www.kingofpodcasts.comSupport KOP by subscribing to his YouTube channel and search for King Of PodcastsFollow KOP on X and TikTok @kingofpodcasts Listen to KOP’s other programs, Podcasters Row… and the Wrestling is Real Wrestling Podcast and The Broadcasters Podcast at http://www.kingofpodcasts.comBuy KOP a Coffee https://buymeacoffee.com/kingofpodcastsDrop KOP a PayPal https://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_button_id=3TAB983ZQPNVLDrop KOP a CashApp https://cash.app/$kingofallpodcastsBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/wrestling-is-real-wrestling-podcast--1559158/support.
